The Aroma Of Christ

The Gospel of Christ is the fragrance of life to some and the smell of death to others.
1. God's people are called to spread the Gospel of Christ everywhere. (v. 12-14)
2. The Gospel divides all of humanity into two camps. (v. 15-16)(1) "Those who are being saved"(2) "Those who are perishing"- LUKE 2:34 / Rising and falling- JOHN 3:36 / Believers = Eternal Life and Rejects = God's Wrath- 1 CORINTHIANS 1:18 / Foolishness = Perishing and Power of God = Saved
3. Gospel messengers are to serve with sincere motives and not for financial gain. (v. 17)

The External Foe: Victory Over The World

"The world" in this passage is not referring to the created order or to the human race, but to an ordered system which is opposed to God."
JOHN 7:7 - The world is evil.JOHN 12:31 - The world is under satan's domain.JOHN 12:46 - The world is a dark place.JOHN 15:18-19 - The world hates Jesus & His followers.
1. The world seeks to usurp the affections of God's people. (v. 15)
2. The world tempts us in three areas: (v. 16)(1) Sensual Pleasures - "the lust of the flesh"(2) Self-Indulgent Greed - "the lust of the eyes"(3) Arrogant Pride - "the pride of life"
3. The world is temporal but all who live for God are eternal. (v. 17)- Romans 12:2

The Grace Of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a grace gift which is essential to the spiritual health of God's people.
1. Individually, forgiveness is essential for the spiritual health of the sinner who repents. (v. 5-8)- 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 & 12-13 / The back story- Matthew 18:15-17 / Jesus' teaching on dealing with sin in the church.
2. Corporately, forgiveness is essential for the spiritual health of the church that is sinned against. (v. 9-11)- 2 Satanic dangers:(1) Moral laxity(2) Harsh self-righteousness

The Internal Foe: Victory Over The Sin Nature

1. Recognize you are in a spiritual war with the sinful nature. (v. 16-18)- Romans 7:15-25 / Paul's confession
2. Reckon yourself to be dead to the sinful nature. (v. 19-21 & 24)- Romans 6:11-14 / Paul's deliverance
3. Rely upon the Holy Spirit for supernatural power over the sinful nature. (v. 22-23 & 25)- Ephesians 5:18 / Paul's power source

Integrity In Gospel Ministry

A lifestyle of integrity is indispensable to Gospel ministry.
3 Marks Of Integrity Found In Paul's Life:
1. A clear conscience (1:12-14)- Acts 23:1- Acts 24:16
2. Honest speech(1:15-24)- 1 Corinthians 16:5-9- Matthew 5:33-37
3. A tender heart (2:1-4)

The Ministry Of Comfort

The Greeting (v. 1-2)
1. God is the source of our comfort. (v. 3-4a)- Some promises of God:  Isaiah 40:11 & 29-31 -- A promise to shepherd His people.  Isaiah 41:10 -- A promise of His sustaining presence.  Isaiah 43:1-3a -- A promise of His protective presence.  Matthew 11:28-30 -- A promise of rest.
2. The church is the minster of the comfort which God provides. (v. 4b-11)- Paul's peronal testimony og comfort in the midst of hardships:  1 Corinthians 4:8-9, 4:16-17, 6:3-10

The Necessity Of Moral Judgement

1. In a healthy church God's people love God; therefore, they worship Him passionately. (Psalm 63:1-5)- Do I really love God?- Do my actions reveal my love for Him?
2. In a healthy church God's people love God's Word; therefore, they obey its precepts wholeheartedly. (Psalm 119:9-11)- Does my lifestyle show I love God's Word because I am seeking to obey it?
3. In a healthy church God's people love one another; therefore, they live together harmoniously. (Psalm 133:1-3)
4. In a healthy church God's people love the lost; therefore, they proclaim the Gospel faithfully. (Psalm 51:10-13)
5. In a healthy church God's people love the nations; therefore, they go into the world fearlessly. (Psalm 67:1-2)
