Exodus 7:14-12:32

Robert Jensen: In the Scriptures...its first among the LORD's attributes that he is a jealous God.

 

Kirk Wellum: The jealousy of God is his holy commitment to his honor, glory and love that manifests itself in the salvation of his people and the just condemnation of all who stand in opposition to him.

Boice: "In order to understand these plagues we need to understand...they were directed against the gods and goddesses of Egypt and were intended to show the superiority of the God of Israel…There were about eighty major deities in Egypt, all clustered about the three great natural forces of Egyptian life: the Nile, land and sky"

 

First Plague: Water to Blood (7:14-21)

Second Plague: Frogs (8:1-6)

Third Plague: Gnats (8:16-17)

Fourth Plague: Flies (8:21-24)

Fifth Plague: Egyptian Livestock Die (9:1-7)

Sixth Plague: Boils (9:8-12)

Seventh Plague: Hailstorm (9:13-35)

Eighth Plague: Locusts (10:1-20)

Ninth Plague: Darkness (10:21-29)

Tenth Plague: Death of the Firstborn or Lamb (11:-12:32)

 

4:22 Israel is my firstborn son 23...Let my son go that he may serve me. If you refuse...I will kill your firstborn son

 

Luke 23:44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the 9th hour

 

Amos 8:9 On that day declares the LORD God I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight 10...I will make it like the mourning for an only son.

 

Our Response:

1. Because God is jealous, no believer should fret with what is going on in our world

2. Because God is jealous, every believer should flee that which provokes his jealousy

3. Because God is jealous, we should be committed to that which he is committed

4. Because God is jealous, the unbeliever should run to the only place where judgment on sin and salvation from sin meet: Jesus Christ and him crucified and raised.
